Heghoulian The music of The Hardy Tree is as intriguing as the headstone-encircled ash in the grounds of St. Pancras Old Church after which Frances Castle’s musical project is named. & Castle shares with Thomas Hardy a fascination & reverence for forgotten customs & vanished ways of life, as well as for the weird & unexplained. The title of this album recalls that slogan of ‘68, ‘Under the cobblestones, the beach’, although here it’s perhaps the countryside that’s the site of (lost) utopian promise. Favorite track: Harmony Hall.

about

*November 2020 Artwork has been updated and audio remastered for vinyl re-issue coming early 2021.

The Fields Lie Sleeping Underneath by The Hardy Tree was originally released on CD in two editions of 100 on the Clay Pipe Music label. The first was in blue and the second yellow ochre. Both came in hand printed sleeves, and both are now sold out.

The download comes with a .pdf of the original illustrated booklet.

The music on 'The Fields Lie Sleeping Underneath' was inspired by Frances Castles local London neighbourhood, a soundtrack to the past beneath the pavements, its early grass covered hills, Victorian heyday, and 20th century sprawl. Recorded at home in an attic room over a year, she has patched and stitched together an orchestral jigsaw puzzle of sounds that hint at audio memories from lost kids 70 TV program's, ghost orchestras, cinema organs, folk song , and static and crackle.
